Engine hours that tell you when the service is due
The meter on the engine is the one that counts. AFTWISE records what it reads, rolls each service interval forward from it, and tells you what comes due next.
A calendar reminder cannot know that you ran the boat forty hours this month and none the last. Service on an engine is owed by hours, and sometimes by both hours and time, whichever comes first.
AFTWISE schedules each item by engine hours, by date, or by both, and keeps the hours with the equipment they belong to.
Where the numbers come from
- Trips. Record the ending hours when you close out a trip, and each engine’s meter moves with it
- Generators. Stop a tracked generator run and AFTWISE offers an ending reading worked from the starting hours and the time it ran. It is offered, not written: you can type over it, and the meter on the machine is the one that counts
- The tender. Its outboard has its own hour meter and service interval, separate from the main engines
Service that comes due on time
- Maintenance by hours or date for every engine and generator: oil, filters, impellers, belts and anodes
- Home, Alerts and the Calendar show what is due, so the next morning’s list changes when yesterday’s hours are in
- Service history keeps the hours with each job, so the next interval counts from the real last service
- Oil capacity and grade per engine and generator, so the run to the store is one trip
Questions about tracking engine hours
How do I track engine hours on a boat?
Record the engine meter reading when you end a trip. AFTWISE keeps the reading with the engine’s record and counts each service interval from it.
Can service reminders be set by hours instead of dates?
Yes. A maintenance item can be due by engine hours, by date, or by both.
Can it track a generator separately?
Yes. A generator has its own hours. When you stop a tracked run, AFTWISE offers an ending reading worked from the starting hours and the run time, which you can accept or replace with what the meter shows.
What about the dinghy outboard?
The tender’s outboard has its own hour meter and service interval, kept apart from the main engines.
Does it connect to my engine?
No. You enter the readings. AFTWISE is a recordkeeping tool and does not read data from your engines.
