Boat checklists you can change to fit your boat
Pre-departure, engine room, docking and emergency drills — example lists to start from, run step by step, and kept with the trip.
A checklist on paper gets damp, gets lost and cannot tell you it was skipped last Tuesday. A checklist app that just shows a list is not much better.
AFTWISE runs a checklist as a procedure: each step is checked, failed, skipped, or put off to a time you choose, and a failed step holds the list open until you answer it.
Lists to start from, steps you can change
- Example checklists for pre-departure, engine room, docking, emergency drills and more
- Copy any shipped list and change its steps, or write one from scratch
- Critical steps are marked, so what matters is not buried
- Answer by voice, once Read steps aloud is on, for the step in front of you
- Readings record what a step measured, such as 14.2 volts, not just “checked” (Cruiser and Captain)
The checklists are examples to start from. They are not official or approved procedures; follow your boat’s own manuals.
A record, not a reminder
- A failed step holds the checklist open until you answer it again, defer it, skip it, or finish with the failure recorded
- Defer a step and AFTWISE raises a task for it, due when you said you would come back; finishing the step later closes the task
- Checklists attach to the trip you are running, so the record stays with the passage
- Backup and export carry your checklists and their history
Questions about boat checklists
What should be on a pre-departure checklist?
That depends on your boat, which is why AFTWISE gives you an example list to change rather than a fixed one. Typical items cover engine fluids and belts, bilge and pumps, fuel on board, safety gear, navigation lights, weather and who is aboard. Follow your boat’s own manuals.
Are the checklists official?
No. They are examples to start from. Change them to fit your boat, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the rules that apply to you.
Can I write my own?
Yes. Copy any shipped list and edit it, or write one from scratch. Each plan includes a number of checklists of your own.
What if a step fails?
The checklist stays open at that step until you answer it again, defer it, skip it, or finish with the failure recorded. A failure is not quietly passed over.
Can I use it with voice?
Yes. With Read steps aloud on, Answer by voice listens for about eight seconds after each step is read for Checked, Fail, Defer, Skip, Back or Repeat, recognizes your words on the device, and saves nothing. Both switches are off until you turn them on, and the buttons keep working.
