Privacy and data handling

Scope

This notice describes the public AFTWISE™ website and the current AFTWISE™ application data posture. Aftwise, LLC may update it when hosting, payment, analytics, or account services change.

Your vessel records

Your vessel records — equipment, maintenance, trips, documents, people, expenses and everything else you enter — are stored in the application data store on each of your devices and synchronized between them through iCloud, in the private iCloud database that belongs to your Apple ID. Apple hosts that database under your Apple ID, and it counts against your iCloud storage. Aftwise, LLC operates no server, holds no copy of your records, and has no access to your iCloud database. iCloud sync is on by default on every plan and can be turned off in the app; with it off, the records on a device stay on that device.

Aftwise, LLC does not receive those records unless you deliberately send them to us, for example by attaching an export to a support request.

A few things leave your device, each when you use the feature. Marine weather and tide predictions come from NOAA: asking for a forecast, or opening a new hourly check while AFTWISE may use your location, sends the position being asked about to NOAA’s public services, and AFTWISE says so on screen. In App Store privacy terms this is Precise Location, used only for the feature you asked for, not linked to you and not used to track you. Aftwise, LLC does not receive it. Searching for a marina, an address or a place, and turning a position into a place name, use Apple Maps, so the search text or the position goes to Apple. Purchases are handled by Apple through the App Store. Alert Texts send nothing from AFTWISE: it fills in a message in Apple’s Messages and you tap Send, to the people you chose. Add Item by Voice uses Apple’s speech recognition, which may send the recording to Apple to transcribe on a device that cannot recognize offline; Answer by Voice recognizes your words on your device and saves nothing; a request you make through Siri is handled by Apple. Links AFTWISE opens — a carrier’s tracking page, a booking site, a shared map link — go to your browser or the app you choose, and nothing about them is sent to us. Apart from those, AFTWISE sends nothing: there is no AFTWISE account, no analytics and no advertising, and your vessel records go to your own devices and your own iCloud and nowhere else.

There is no AFTWISE account

The application has no sign-in, no password and no user account. Sync uses your Apple ID’s iCloud, not an account with us. We do not hold a profile for you and we do not know that you are using the app. Subscriptions are processed by Apple through your Apple ID; Aftwise, LLC does not receive or store your payment-card details.

Backups and exported files

You control where personal backups and exported files are stored or sent. Those files may contain sensitive vessel, ownership, crew, financial or location information. You are responsible for protecting them and for choosing an appropriate storage location.

Contacting us from the website

This website has no forms. You can contact Aftwise, LLC from it by email to support@aftwise.com, and an email you send is handled like any other correspondence: it is read, answered where a reply is needed, and kept for as long as reasonably necessary.

Please do not email passwords, payment-card numbers, identity documents, medical information, or vessel-security details that are not necessary to answer your question.

Device permissions in the app

AFTWISE asks for each permission on its own, when a feature needs it, rather than in one batch at first launch. This is the complete list of what the app can ask for:

  • Camera — receipt photos, equipment QR labels, business cards, and vessel or contact photos
  • Photo library — choosing photos for equipment, the vessel, contacts, business cards, receipts and checklist evidence; and access to add an image to your library, nothing more, when you choose Save Image while sharing
  • Location — on iPhone and iPad this is two separate grants, and they are worth reading as two. While using the app covers recording the route of a trip you started, including with the screen locked or another app in front while it records, VLOG filming locations, precise positions you log, your position written into a text you choose to send, and local weather and marine conditions. Always does one more thing: it lets a recording that is still running resume after the app has been closed or the phone restarted. On Mac it is a single location grant.
  • Microphone and speech recognition — when you choose Add Item by Voice, and when you turn on Answer by Voice in a checklist. Answer by Voice listens for a few seconds after a step is read, recognizes your words on your device, and saves nothing. Add Item by Voice prefers on-device recognition where the device supports it; on a device that cannot recognize offline, Apple’s servers may transcribe the recording. Read Steps Aloud speaks and needs neither.
  • Apple Contacts — importing crew, if you ask for it. AFTWISE reads your contacts; it does not change anything in them.
  • Notifications — the reminders you arm: maintenance and service, a trip’s departure time, a deferred checklist step, hourly checks under way, document, insurance and EPIRB expiry, trial reminders, and the badge that counts overdue tasks. Decline it and no reminder arrives; the records are unaffected.

Opening a document from Files goes through the standard system picker, which asks for no permission at all.

Each is refused independently, and declining one costs you that feature and nothing else. Location degrades in two steps rather than one. Refuse it outright and trips, checklists, hourly checks, sea service and the close-out all still work — hours come from your departure and arrival times, not from GPS — while route tracking, current position, the fuel range rings and local weather stop being available. Grant “while using” but not “always” and everything works, recording with the screen locked included; a recording ends if the app is closed, and Always is what lets it resume.

Retention and requests

Aftwise, LLC keeps emails for as long as reasonably needed for support, business, legal and security purposes. Privacy requests may be sent to support@aftwise.com.
